The Cody 59ers at the Hobby Fair
Park County Library April 22 & 23, 2022
The Cody 59ers Rock Club took advantage of a "Hobby Fair" held at the Park County Library in Cody to share our interests with the general public. Members brought collections, specimens, lapidary and jewelry items, as well as, rock enthusiasm to the event on April 22nd and 23rd. Adult visitors to the library were greeted by our members who shared information about rocks and membership. A large selection of polished stones was available for youngsters to search through and select their "perfect" specimens. Our club is thankful for the opportunity given us by the Cody Library to share with our neighbors the educational and recreational activities 59ers provide. The Hobby Fair was an enjoyable family friendly event that we hope will be continued. Our club also extends its gratitude to the staff at the library that coordinated and made this community outreach program an enjoyable success.

Local Ecologist Kassy Skeen shared her knowledge with the club at a recent meeting. We learned about soils and conditions which are unique to our area, and about some endemic plant species that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. She left us with multiple resources for identification, as well as ways to learn more about our local flora.
Thank you Kassy!

Ned Kelley gave a wonderful presentation about his adventures in Yellowstone Park. Together, he and his wife Lynette have spent many years exploring Yellowstone country. He shared many, many photos of “catch and release” rock and mineral finds, as well as beautiful scenery, geology, and wildlife that they have witnessed and photographed. We hope to have Ned back to share more of his adventures with us. He is a member of both the Cody 59ers Rock Club, and the Shoshone Rock Club in Powell.

Clarence "Doc" Ellis joins us from time to time as a guest speaker. At our April 2017 meeting, he taught us a handy mnemonic device to memorize the minerals of the Mohs hardness scale. He also shared samples of each, and brought copies of all of his books, including two new ones about rockhounding in the Big Horn Basin.
When Doc speaks at our meetings, he takes time to help members ID their odd rocks and specimens that are not easy to identify.

Our first collecting trip of 2017 was a great success. Besides finding banded iron at Tough Creek, a stop at the old quarry on Birdseye Pass Rd yielded up banded chert and a few other interesting finds. The weather was perfect, and everyone was delighted to be out after our long winter!

The 59ers' very own long time member Jim Platt gave a flint knapping demonstration at our September meeting. We are lucky to have some very talented people in the club!
